I just don’t walk
I just don’t walk
I just don't walk", "I just don't hear", "I just don't see" - plaques with such inscriptions appeared in Ostrów Wielkopolski. what do they mean? This is the next stage of the "I'm only disabled" campaign.
- These slogans are to remind us that disability should not define anyone. This is an important lesson for all of us. About 7,000 people with disabilities live in Ostrów Wielkopolski. This is on average every tenth inhabitant of Ostrow. They are members of our families, friends from school or work, neighbours and friends. Let's remember about it - says Beata Klimek, Mayor of Ostrów Wielkopolski.
The originator of the slogans is Dariusz Peśla, a disabled resident of Ostrów, who works for people with disabilities.
Two institutions joined the action: Primary School No. 1 and Primary School No. 5. Pupils of integration classes, 5b and 7b from "Primary School No. 1 and 4b and 6b from Primary School No.5, hung signs around the city to draw attention to the social exclusion of people with disabilities.
- We focus on disabilities, but are we all able-bodied? The "I'm Only Disabled" campaign is a great beginning. However, we dream of continuing it in the future, and even expanding it, because it is also worth remembering that there are other kind of disabilities that are not visible, such as autism. In our integration classes, we learn that each of us has flaws, not disabilities: I only don't walk, but I also just don't remember, I'm just afraid of people, I just don't like to talk - stress the tutors of integration classes from Primary School No. 5.
The campaign "I am only disabled" - TV spots, billboards, leaflets, meetings of disabled people with residents" is a part of the project "E-Ostrów 2050 - Ecological, Energy, Economic City", which is implemented with the participation of funds obtained by the city from the Mechanism of the Financial European Economic Area under the "Local Development" programme.
The project's partner is the Ostrów’ citizens for Children of Special Care Association.
