Making our city more sustainable
Ostrów Wielkopolski, which implements the project" E-Ostrów 2050 - Ecological, Energy and Economic city”, is among 29 Polish cities that have received financial support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. For its implementation, the city obtained the amount of EUR 3.5 million, i.e. almost PLN 16 million from the European Economic Area in 2014-2021.
The local government of Ostrów Wielkopolski is already working on the first activities of the project:
- thermomodernization of Primary School No. 1 at Partyzancka street;
- preparation of investment areas by building the road surfaces system in the area of Wroclawska/ Wysocka streets;
- development of low-emission public transport through the construction and modernization of transport infrastructure, i.e. bus stop shelters, green bus shelters and information boards;
- a cycle of reportages and interviews with the owners of Ostrów’ companies.
Each of the above mentioned projects represents different areas, but they have got one idea in common: to serve both the present and future generations of Ostrów Wielkopolski.
- The project "E-Ostrów 2050 - Ecological, Energy and Economic City" represents a very ambitious and comprehensive set of multidimensional activities that will contribute to the sustainable development of Ostrów in the social, environmental, economic and institutional dimensions. Simply put, by implementing the project we want Ostrów to be even more friendly and attractive place to live - says Beata Klimek, Mayor of Ostrów Wielkopolski.
The project concentrates on, among others:
- friendly, safe and modern urban mobility,
- development of cheap, accessible and modern schools, kindergartens and nurseries,
- greater energy efficiency of public utility facilities,
- reduction of smog and air pollution,
- providing attractive investment areas,
- higher level of professionalism and competences of local government employees,
The implementation of the project "E-Ostrów 2050 - Ecological, Energy and Economic City" will last until 2024. In spring this year, Ostrów Wielkopolski will host an opening and promotional conference of the project. The conference will allow to exchange knowledge and experiences between Ostrów’s local government representatives and representatives from other cities.
The EEA Grants represent the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to creating a green, competitive and inclusive Europe.
There are two general objectives: reducing economic and social inequalities in Europe and strengthening bilateral relations between donor states and the EU-15 countries in Central and Southern Europe and the Baltic Sea area.
The three Donor States cooperate closely with the EU under the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA). Donors contributed EUR 3.3 billion as part of successive fund programs in 1994–2014. EEA funds for the period 2014-2021 are EUR 1.55 billion. The priorities for this period are:
# 1 innovation, research, education and competitiveness;
# 2 social inclusion, youth employment and poverty reduction;
# 3 Environment, Energy, Climate Change and Low Carbon Economy;
# 4 Culture, Civil Society, Good Governance and Fundamental Rights;
# 5 justice and home affairs.
The EEA Grants are jointly financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, whose contributions are based on their GDP.
Eligibility for the funds results from meeting the criteria set out in the EU Cohesion Fund for Member States where gross domestic income per capita is less than 90% of the EU average.
